Sequoia

What makes it unique

The subject is scale, and scale needs either diffused light or snow. The Giant Forest sits at 6,500 feet, which keeps it comfortable through a summer that ruins the valley below.

Access

The Generals Highway requires chains in winter and closes in storms. Mineral King Road construction runs through 2027. Crystal Cave tours are ticketed. Nonresident fee park.

Avoid

Nothing is truly off-limits, but late summer brings Central Valley smoke and haze that flattens the canopy light.
