Bryce Canyon · UtahBryce Canyon Amphitheatre
The Southern Paiute people called this place Angka-ku-wass-a-wits, meaning "red painted faces," believing the hoodoos were ancient People turned to stone by a trickster coyote. In the late 1800s, it took its modern name from Ebenezer Bryce, a Scottish immigrant who famously remarked that the canyon was "a hell of a place to lose a cow."
