Zion

What makes it unique

A slot canyon that runs north-south, which means the good light is bounced rather than direct and the season is set by water temperature and flow, not by air temperature.

Access

Canyon shuttle is mandatory roughly March to November; private cars are allowed on the Scenic Drive in the winter gap. Angels Landing needs a rec.gov permit year-round.

Avoid

July and August: 100°F-plus on the canyon floor and monsoon flash-flood closures that shut the Narrows with little warning.
